The last major Christian animated movie to be released in the United States was The Prince of Egypt – nearly 20 years ago. But that’s going to change this November when The Star, a 3D   adventure Christian animated movie based on the nativity of Jesus will be released by Sony Pictures Animation.

According to official promotional material, The Star is a film about “a small but brave donkey named Bo [who] yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free, and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a loveable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become unlikely heroes in the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas.”

If the name Sony doesn’t catch your attention then you might recognize some of the big names that will be involved in the cast of Christian animated movie and the soundtrack. The cast includes such well known voices as Tyler Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Tracy Morgan, Kris Kristofferson, and Oprah Winfrey.

Spring Aspers, the Head of Music for Sony Pictures has described the film as a “funny but faithful turn on the nativity story.” And they have spared no expense, getting a number of top-tier musical artists to put together a soundtrack that includes original songs as well as solid classics.

Aspers describes the soundtrack, which will be released on October 27, by saying, “This compilation is full of covers of Christmas classics old and new that not only perfectly fit the film, but make the perfect soundtrack for the season.”

Headlining the album is superstar Mariah Carey, whose “soulful performance of the film’s theme song adds a layer of depth and emotion that will have audiences feeling the spirit.”

The album will also include songs by Fifth Harmony, A Great Big World, Kirk Franklin, Casting Crowns, Yolanda Adams, and others.

With the big names surrounding this film, it could be the perfect vehicle for Christians and churches to strike up conversations with others about the events of Jesus’ birth. And the soundtrack might just be the perfect way to get ready for the Christmas season.

The Star will be released in theaters nationwide on November 17. The soundtrack is currently available for pre-order.
